How to Check MX Records

MX records define which mail servers receive email for a domain. Use this workflow before acquisitions, migrations, or deliverability troubleshooting.

  1. Step 1: Open the MX lookup tool

Navigate to the MX record lookup hub or enter your domain on the homepage search.

  2. Step 2: Review priority and exchange values

Lower MX priority numbers route first. Confirm multiple exchanges exist for failover if mail is critical.

  3. Step 3: Cross-check SPF and DMARC TXT records

Use the SPF/DMARC checker or full DNS report to ensure mail policy TXT records align with MX hosts.

  4. Step 4: Document baseline before transfers

Save MX priorities and TXT policies before registrar or hosting migrations to detect drift later.
